Giving a dog a second chance can be one of life’s most rewarding experiences. You are not starting from scratch with an adult dog. You’ll have less work and fewer surprises!

There are many well-intentioned animal shelters and rescue groups out there. Many dog re-homing organisations are excellent but there are a few who have little idea of what they are doing. Good dog rehoming organisations can advise on exactly what the dog needs and if you are the right person to give it.

Here are the questions you need to ask a dog re-homing organisation before you fall for the cute doggie with the sad eyes at the animal shelter.

Questions to ask a dog re-homing organisation

  1. What is the history of the dog? (It may be difficult to get this information but it is worth a try to find out why the dog was surrendered or abandoned).
  2. Has the dog had a behavioural assessment to identify any fears or behavioural issues you need to be aware of?
  3. What are the physical and behavioural needs of this particular dog?
  4. What are the dog’s likes and dislikes?
  5. Has the dog been fostered with a family?
  6. What is the dog’s temperament and energy level?
  7. Does the dog get on with other dogs, children and cats?
  8. Is the dog comfortable with being handled?
  9. Has the dog been health checked by a veterinarian?
  10. Has the dog been microchipped, vaccinated and treated for worms, eas and ticks?
  11. Do you provide on-going support, dog training and information after adoption?
  12. Can I take the dog home for a trial?
